How to become a productivity beast – goal setting and task planning in your business

Did you reach your revenue and growth goals in 2019? Here’s a golden nugget by Amy Wees from Amazing at Home Business Consulting that explains the techniques she uses to set goals and milestones in her businesses based on her 18 years of experience as a military strategist and planner. Watch this nugget video to learn how she sets goals, maps out the steps and milestones necessary to reach them, and measures performance along the way!

What is your goal? More sales? Social Media growth?

Make sure your goal is SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, ATTAINABLE, RELEVANT, and TIME BASED

More sales… not specific, not measurable. How about

Reach $5k in sales revenue (100 pillows at $50) on our new black and gold throw pillows in the month of January.

Let’s get to planning!!

Make a list of the steps needed to reach this goal

  1. Bring more traffic to the listing
  2. Identify advertising channels where people are interested in trending home decor
  3. Design advertising campaigns for each channel
  4. Create enticing offer to get them excited about having our pillows in their home
  5. Deliver the campaigns to each channel
  6. Convert 100 buyers

Prioritize the steps in order to reach the goal

  1. Identify advertising channels where people are interested in trending home decor
  2. Create enticing offer to get them excited about having our pillows in their home
  3. Design advertising campaigns for each channel
  4. Deliver the campaigns to each channel
  5. Bring more traffic to the listing
  6. Convert buyers

To find missing steps. Ask yourself, if I complete all of these steps, will I have reached my goal?

Study successful competitors techniques

  1. Identify advertising channels where people are interested in trending home decor
  2. Create enticing offer to get them excited about having our pillows in their home
  3. Design advertising campaigns for each channel
  4. Deliver the campaigns to each channel

Execute and monitor the ads for effective retargeting

  1. Bring more traffic to the listing
  2. Convert buyers

For each step, answer this one question and add it under the step –

How will I know when I’ve completed this task?

Is it sending an email? Making an order? Finishing this video? This is called a measure of performance. It’s how you ensure you’ve completed each step before moving onto the next one.

  1. Study successful competitors techniques
    1. MOP: document the web and social media techniques of 2 top competitors
  2. Identify advertising channels where people are interested in trending home decor
    1. MOP: Identify 3 advertising channels for campaigns
  3. Create enticing offer to get them excited about having our pillows in their home
  4. Design advertising campaigns for each channel
  5. Deliver the campaigns to each channel
  6. Execute and monitor the ads for effective retargeting
  7. Bring more traffic to the listing
  8. Convert buyers

Assign a goal date and work backwards, applying milestone dates to each big step, ensuring you reach your goal on time.

Goal: Reach $5k in sales revenue (100 pillows at $50) on our new black and gold throw pillows in the month of February

  1. Study successful competitors techniques 30 Dec – 3 January
  2. Identify advertising channels where people are interested in trending home decor 5-7 January
  3. Create enticing offer to get them excited about having our pillows in their home 8-10 January
  4. Design advertising campaigns for each channel 13-24 January
  5. Deliver the campaigns to each channel 27 – 31 January
  6. Execute and monitor the ads for effective retargeting 1 February
  7. Bring more traffic to the listing 1-29 February
  8. Convert buyers 1-29 Feb (START HERE)

Also assign a measure of effectiveness to your goal

  • How will you know you’re actions were effective in reaching your goal? $10k in sales for the month? 20% conversion rate on your advertising campaign?

Goal: Reach $5k in sales revenue (100 pillows at $50) on our new black and gold throw pillows in the month of February

MOE: Sell 100 pillows

Next, return to the first step and break it down further into tasks.

Make a list of things to do to complete the task and what can be outsourced in order to meet the milestone completion deadline

  1. Study successful competitors techniques
    1. MOP: document the web and social media techniques of 2 top competitors
      1. Choose top 2 competitors based on sales data and relevance to our product and target customer
      2. Look up their web and social media presence
      3. Document examples of posts and campaigns with the most engagement and correlate it with sales
      4. Document a plan to use similar techniques to capture our own audience based on our differentiation.

Remember, goals are most effectively reached in steps, not leaps.

Take one step at a time. Prioritize your steps. Don’t worry about breaking down all the tasks for step three before you’ve worked out step one. Don’t let the hugeness of your goal overwhelm you.

Most importantly, effectively outsource your tasks! A team of people with a documented plan can execute tasks much more quickly and effectively than one person trying to figure everything out.
